pygmy marmoset
(cebuella pygmaea)

distribution

Amazon basin

habitat

Preferred habitat is tropical evergreen forests and river floodplains, but they are highly adaptable and able to survive in disturbed environments.

biological characteristics

Pygmy marmosets are arboreal and diurnal – this means they live in trees and are active during the day. They are usually docile and gentle, but like many primates are very territorial. They feed primarily on tree sap and gum, known as exudates, but also eat fruits and insects. Adults are about five inches (13 cm) long with an eight-inch (20 cm) tail. They are most commonly found in groups of two to six, made up of an adult pair and their offspring. Unusually for primates and mammals they are monogamous and mate for life.

conservation status

Despite loss of habitat, the Pygmy Marmoset has managed to sustain an unthreatened population. (IUCN red data list)
