We are sad to share the news that Nala, our much‑loved giant anteater, passed away over the weekend.

Nala joined Camperdown Wildlife Centre in 2022 after being retired from the breeding programme at Edinburgh Zoo. Born in the USA in 2005, she was a remarkable ambassador for her species and became well known for the pioneering care she received for diabetes.

She became a viral sensation when videos of her diabetes care on TikTok and Instagram reached more than 7.5 million views, capturing the hearts of people around the world.

Nala’s calm nature and gentle personality brought joy to us all, especially her keepers. Her passing follows the loss of her long‑term companion, Lucifer, who died at the end of last year at the age of 21. She will be greatly missed by everyone at Camperdown Wildlife Centre.
